Annotation:

The course is intended for all 3rd-age students interested in modern architecture in Prague context and possessing basic language skills in French. It is focused on significant Prague buildings from 20th century, which will guide us through the evolution of modern architecture from Art Nouveau till brutalism. This course is attended by architects, guides and other passionate enthusiasts. It is opened to both new and follow-up students from the course Historical Monuments in French. The students enrolled can participate in the creation of the new syllabus. The course consists of 6 seminars and 4 commented sightseeing tours across Prague. The instruction will be run in French language. The detailed syllabus is in the item Structure. You will receive the list of recommended literature on the 1st session. Gradually you will receive study materials from the teacher.

Structure:

The course consists of 6 seminars and 4 commented sightseeing tours. It will include buildings from the periods of Art Nouveau till brutalism.

Obsah:

1.   Main development periods of Prague architecture of 20th century,

Art Nouveau         (Obecní dům, Živnobanka, palác Koruna)          

2.   Geometric modern, cubism, rondocubism

(Lucerna Palace , house At the Black Madonna, Adria Palace )

3.   Neoclassicism  (Law Faculty, church of the Saint Lord´s Heart, Czech National Bank)

4.   Functionalism  (Trade Fair Palace, Sevastopol Palace, Baťa department store, exhibition hall Mánes)  

5.   Socialist realism, Brussels style  (hotel International, hotel Jalta, Expo 58, addition to Emauzy towers)

6.   Brutalism (hotel Intercontinental, Kotva department store, addition to National Assembly - today the New building of National Museum)

7.   Postmodernism ( deconstructivism, high-tech) (ČKD building and EURO Palace Na Můstku,  Myslbek Palace, Dancing House, TV tower)    

8.   Commented sightseeing tours - Track I: Republic Square, Na Příkopě Street, Wenceslas Square

9.   Track II: Můstek, Jungmannovo Square, Národní Street, Legions´ Bridge

10. Track III: The Curies Square, Dvořák Embankment, Revolution Avenue
